James Carpenter M.D.

I was born in Montana but raised primarily in Oregon on a small ranch.  After completing my undergraduate studies, I moved to Washington, D.C., to pursue research experience at the National Institutes of Health focusing on epilepsy research.  After one and half years there, I completed a Masters Degree in Advanced Medical Sciences from Boston University.  With my interest in brain behavior and neuropsychology, I completed a Masters Degree in Psychology at the University of Oregon.  Realizing that my true calling lies in Medicine, I attended the University of Minnesota and received my Medical Degree in 1996.  After four incredibly “cold” years in Minnesota I moved to Arizona and completed my Internal Medicine residency at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale. 

Because of an interest in Native American health care and a scholarship commitment, I spent four years at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center practicing inpatient and outpatient Internal Medicine.  The experience was a rewarding challenge and provided me with much of my insight into complicated chronic medical conditions.  

I am very excited to be affiliated with the Thunderbird Internal Medicine practice.  Their progressive philosophy and commitment to the delivery of excellent health care aligns well with my own visions and philosophy.  I envision developing patient-physician relationships which afford care aimed at preventative, acute and chronic medical maintenance. 

I am married to my best friend who is also a registered nurse. We love living in Arizona and look forward to raising our family here.  I enjoy golf, tennis, travel, and trap & skeet shooting.
